Products Description of o-Xylene CAS#95-47-6
o-Xylene, alternatively called ortho-xylene or 1,2-dimethylbenzene, has a molecular formula of C₈H₁₀. It is a transparent, colourless liquid aromatic hydrocarbon with a characteristic sweet aromatic smell. It shows negligible solubility in water, yet mixes completely with ethanol, ether and most other organic solvents.
This aromatic compound is obtained from naphtha reforming fractions by separation from mixed xylene isomers. It retains stable chemical properties at ordinary room conditions, and its fixed boiling point makes it fit for regulated oxidation reactions. As a highly flammable and volatile substance, it should be stored apart from heat sources, sparks and open fire. It is a vital petrochemical aromatic intermediate, particularly ideal for the production of phthalic anhydride.

Product Application of o-Xylene CAS#95-47-6
o-Xylene is the primary industrial raw material for catalytic oxidation to yield phthalic anhydride. This derivative is then used to make phthalate plasticizers, alkyd resins and unsaturated polyester resins, which see broad application within PVC, coating and composite material sectors. It also works as an effective aromatic solvent for solvent-borne paints, varnishes, printing inks and adhesive formulations, capable of dissolving resins and tuning the viscosity of finished mixtures.
Furthermore, it is utilised in the synthesis of o-toluic acid, agrochemical intermediates and dyestuff precursors. It can function as a reference standard for chromatographic testing, and also serve as one component in high-octane fuel mixtures.
